Tea Tree Essential Oil

The tribes of Australia are believed to have used tea tree for thousands of years as traditional medicine in a variety of ways, such as inhaling the oil from the crushed leaves to treat coughs and colds and applying the leaves on wounds as a poultice. They would also brew an infusion of the leaves to make tea used for the treatment of sore throats or application on the skin for minor abrasions, wounds, insect bites and stings.

Tea tree oil is best known for its anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and antiseptic properties. It is used for cosmetic, household and medical purposes. The oil might possibly be the most powerful natural antiseptic known to man. This makes it an important part of any natural medicine cabinet. It is effective against bacteria, fungi, virus, and even stimulates the immune system.

As an anti-fungal, tea tree is known to help with treating acne, athlete’s foot, eczema, and various yeast infections. As an antiseptic, tea tree is used on cuts, burns, insect bites and sunburns. As an anti-viral tea tree, is known to decrease the symptoms of colds and flu when you add a couple drops to bath water. For help with chest congestion add a couple drops to a vaporizer. It is also known to take away persistent body odor if you soak in tea tree bath or get rid of head lice and dandruff if a few drops are added to shampoo.

Tea tree oil can be used in our homes. A few drops added to each load of laundry will leave your clothes smelling cleaner. To make an all purpose cleaner add 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil to 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Tea tree is very effective in keeping mold away. 15 drops in a quart of water has been said to be an effective insect repellent.

Tea tree oil for aromatherapy blends well with Lavender, Clary Sage, Rosemary, Pine, Geranium, Marjoram,  and Clove.
