Mother of Thousands

Mother of Thousands is native to Madagascar. It’s a succulent that grows entirely from one stem. Some of the leaves on my plant are 6inches long and 3 inches wide. The plant can grow up to 3 feet high. Mine is 2 and half feet. Mother of Thousands needs plenty of bright light. Avoid direct afternoon sun and shady areas. Direct morning light is ok.

A really cool feature of the plant is the little plantlets that grow along the edges of the leaves. The plantlets can even develop roots while still attached to the mother leaves. This is where her name comes from, the constant development of plantlets. Mother of thousands will spread very rapidly when planted outdoors. Some people even consider this plant to be a weed due to its constant state of propagation. I recommend growing in a pot, so that you can have some kind of control over the plantlets dropping from her leaves.

When planting the mother of thousands use cactus potting mix. It drains quickly and doesn’t leave the succulent sitting in wet soil. Over watering is the most common form of death in succulents. You should thoroughly saturate the soil and allow the excess to drain out. Let the top few inches dry out completely before you water again. In the winter water you mother of thousands less frequently. But don’t let the soil dry out completely. They still need water to survive.

Mother of Thousands is toxic to cats, dogs and infants if consumed. If your child or pet consumes any part of this plant, seek a doctor or vet immediately.
