Bulbine Frutescens are commonly known as Stalked Bulbine, Snake Flower or Burn Jelly Plant. They are native to South Africa. Bulbine is an aloe like succulent. It has pulpy upright, onion like leaves. When cutting or breaking a leaf a jelly leaks out. Its leaves have been used medicinally in the same ways as Aloe Vera.
This is a drought tolerant plant. Once the roots are established it needs very little water. It enjoys well-drained compost enriched soil. But it can be grown in almost any soil. It can live in full sun or light shade. This plant can grow to be 2 foot tall and 2 foot wide. It grows by rhizomes.
There does not seem to be any real pest problems. Deer do not seem to care for them. They are often used as a ground cover. They bloom from June to October. The flowers are orange or yellow. They are in clusters on long flowering stem. The flowers attract bees, hummingbirds and butterflies.
